KUALA LUMPUR: About four million Malaysians, or 21.5% of the adult population, are addicted to smoking, with almost one out of two males being smokers, according to the National Health and Morbidity Survey.

New ban on tobacco products, 19/07/10

Singapore--THE government has hit the tobacco industry with tighter restrictions, including a ban on alternative tobacco and nicotine products currently available abroad.

These products include smokeless forms of tobacco such as oral and nasal snuff, electric cigarettes, tobacco substitutes such as nicotine water, and fruit and candy-flavoured cigarettes.

Cigarette sales could lead to health crisis, 19/07/10

The health group, Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines (FCAP) warned of public health crisis if the business prospects of the tobacco industry continue to grow in the country.

“The robust growth of the tobacco industry will not likely translate to better government revenues because this will result to higher public health expenditure to subsidize the poor who will be afflicted with smoking-related diseases,” said Dr. Maricar Limpin, FCAP Executive Director.
