Lucky Pasig City residents. It seems their local government is truly concerned about their health.

It was recently  reported that the city was giving public and private establishments two years to remove smoking areas under an amended anti-smoking ordinance by councilor Alexee Santiago.

Raquel Naciongayo, head of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro), said establishments had until 2014 to remove smoking areas. The ordinance covers beerhouses, nightclubs, restaurants, shopping malls, and other private and public establishments.

Fighting Big Tobacco in Malaysia, 31/01/12

JAN 31 — In a country where 46 per cent of males smoke, and where the government spends RM20 billion a year treating tobacco-related illnesses, it is imperative that we as a society demand greater health protection, and stronger tobacco laws.

However, in the enactment of tobacco laws to protect public health, and also in the execution of anti-tobacco/pro-health advocacy, there has been a long history of tobacco industry interference which undermines and very often, blocks efforts from materialising altogether. As someone who has had exposure to tobacco policies and regulation, I am fearful that tobacco industry interference is the most significant obstacle that policymakers and anti-tobacco advocates face today.

Experts warn against clove cigarettes, 27/01/12

Cigarettes flavoured to taste like clove are becoming popular among new smokers because they are tasty and do not make the throat hurt, a seminar on tobacco control was told yesterday.

The aromatic eugenol chemical compound used in the "clove cigarette" helps make the smoker's air sacs numb, prompting them to inhale deeper and subsequently get addicted to the rush of nicotine, Dr Hathai Chitanont, director of Thailand Health Promotion Institute, said.

Anti-tobacco group urges LGUs to phase out smoking areas, 21/01/12

MANILA, Philippines -  Thailand-based Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) urged yesterday local government units (LGUs) in the Philippines to phase out smoking areas.

In a statement, SEATCA director Bungon Ritthiphakdee lauded the Pasay City government for announcing the gradual phase-out of smoking areas in beerhouses, nightclubs, restaurants, shopping malls and other private and public establishments in two years.

“SEATCA congratulates and strongly supports this extremely necessary initiative of the local government. A healthy population is a true indicator of development. We look forward to more local government units following this lead,” Ritthiphakdee said.

Brunei: AFPTC champions a smoke-free ASEAN

THE third meeting of the ASEAN Focal Points on Tobacco Control (AFPTC) began yesterday with Brunei holding chairmanship of the three-day meeting to discuss developments and initiatives on activities to push forward a smoke-free ASEAN community.

Some 30 participants, consisting of technical members of ASEAN countries and ASEAN Secretariat as well as delegations from partner organisations and international agencies, attended the opening ceremony of the meeting held at The Rizqun International Hotel at The Mall, Gadong yesterday.
